How to Apply for Section 8 Housing in the City of Baltimore, Maryland
The Housing Choice Voucher Program, also known as Section 8, is the federal government's way of helping very-low-income people afford housing. Rather than funding government-run apartments or tenements, this program subsidizes rent charged by landlords on private properties. Families must pay 30 percent to 40 percent of their income to the landlord, and Section 8 will pay the remainder of the rent. Though the program is funded at the federal level, each city has its own application and waiting list for local properties. In Baltimore, at time of writing this waiting list is seven years long.

Determine your eligibility. Either the head of the household or a spouse must live, work or have a written job offer within Baltimore County, Maryland. In addition, you must not be able to reasonably afford rent at the current market rate for the area.
2Gather your proof documents. You'll need to prove your citizenship or legal immigration status, Social Security numbers, details of your family size and dependents and income. This could include pay stubs, bank statements, Social Security or disability payment stubs or tax documents. Make sure you've documented every source of income. You'll also need proof that you live, work or have a job offer in Baltimore County, such as a copy of your lease or a current utility bill.
3Download, print and fill in the application. It is available online from the Baltimore County government website. It's a brief two-page form that requires your and your family members' names, Social Security numbers, genders, races, ages and dates of birth. You'll also be asked if you or anyone in your family is disabled and will need to check boxes indicating your income bracket and sources of income. Then you'll sign and date the form.
4Submit your application. Once you've printed and filled it in, mail it in to Baltimore County Housing Office, Drumcastle Government Center, 6401 York Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21212. It should take about two weeks for the office to notify you that your application has been received. If your address and income meet the guidelines, you will be placed on the waiting list.
5Respond promptly when contacted. The housing office may call you in for an interview prior to assigning you to housing, or an apartment may need to be filled quickly. Keeping all your paperwork organized and handy, and responding immediately, is crucial to getting you into your Section 8 home.
