What Should You Ask Before You Move Into an Apartment?
Moving into a new apartment can be an exciting time, but you must ask your new landlord some questions to be sure the rental arrangement is right for your needs. Read the lease agreement carefully before signing it and make a list of questions to ask your new landlord that will provide you with all the details on your new rental relationship.
Utilities
Ask your landlord who is responsible for utility payments, such as water and electricity. Some property owners include utility payments in the cost of the rent. If it is unclear in the lease agreement, ask the landlord to be sure so you understand your total costs for living in the apartment. Also, ask the landlord for an estimated cost for electricity, heating and water and if you are responsible for payment. The property owner can provide you with an estimated cost to heat the apartment during the winter season. This can help you determine if the apartment fits your budget.
Pets and Rules
Even if you don't own any pets when you move into the unit, you may change your mind down the road. Some property owners may allow pets but restrict the breeds, such as larger dogs. Your landlord may allow pets, but require you to keep the yard scrupulously clean or require you to pay a damage deposit.
Neighborhood
Ask about the neighborhood, such as restaurants and shopping in the area. Find out if highway access is nearby for your work commute. Discuss with others living in the neighborhood to determine if the apartment is a good fit for you. For example, if you have kids, you might prefer a neighborhood with many families and children. If you are single without children you might find a neighborhood with lots of children too noisy.
Parking
Find out if you have an assigned parking spot or if you can park in any available space. You should also ask if you have parking available for more than one vehicle when renting the apartment.
Maintenance
Ask who to contact if you have a maintenance issue. Landlords may hire a property manager or management company that handles all maintenance calls.
Decorating
You should find out what you can and cannot do in your apartment. For example, painting or changing the carpet. Some landlords prefer that you do not change the colors on the walls. You may ask if you can make changes to the wall color if you restore it to the original shade before you move out of the apartment.
