How to Move Into the Projects

How to Move Into the Projects

Applying for public assistance can be a harrowing but necessary task for a family in dire straits. Public housing is usually managed by a public housing authority on behalf of a city, county or other jurisdiction. Applicants must prove why they need public housing, and often must wait for vacancies.

Instructions

    1

Visit the website of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the contact information of a housing authority near you. You will need to contact them directly to apply for their services, which often include direct public housing assistance, public housing vouchers and employment or educational assistance programs. The drop-down menu will give you a choice of states, which will lead you to the community closest to you. You may also use the map at the bottom of the screen.

    2

Select the appropriate housing authority and contact them. All agencies accept phone calls, but some will not accept emails or faxes requesting information. Read carefully to see what is accepted. Some housing authorities, such as the New York City Housing Authority, have websites that let you request an application directly.

    3

Ensure you meet the guidelines for public housing. Public housing is often limited to families that meet certain minimum income limits, meet the definition of a family as permitted by state laws, pose no threat to the public and are led by an individual at least 18 years old. Consult the public housing authority in which you're interested for more specific information.

    4

Fill out the application completely. Inaccurate or missing information will only delay the process. Select the housing project in which you're interested if the option is available, and provide accurate information about your family size, income and needs. This will ensure the process goes smoothly. Provide proof of income, benefits, school enrollment and anything else the housing authority requires.

    5

Submit the application to the agency by the method requested, usually either in person or through the mail.

    6

    Receive your public housing assignment.
