How to Rent a Low-Income Apartment With HUD in Paris, Texas

Renting an apartment can be costly. Some areas have high rental rates, and the security deposit can be expensive. You can rent a low-income apartment (also known as Section 8 housing, using housing choice vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Eligibility is determined by your local public housing agency. Your PHA will subsidize your rent payments if you qualify and cannot pay the entire monthly amount yourself. You will have to meet the requirements specified by HUD for your area. If you live in Paris, Texas, visit the PHA office nearest you, apply for housing assistance and look for a place to live.

Call the PHA in Paris, Texas, at 903-784-6651 or visit the office located at 100 George Wright Homes to apply for low-income housing assistance.

Meet the eligibility requirements to receive assistance with paying for an apartment. The annual income of you and all your household members must be less than 50 percent of the median income in Paris. If the total annual income is less than 30 percent of the median in Paris, you have a better chance of receiving assistance because HUD requires 75 percent of all new approvals to be at this level.

Add the income for your household. If your family has four memers, check to see if the total income is $24,400 or below, which represents 50 percent of the median income in Paris, as of 2011. Your family size will determine the maximum amount that you can make under Section 8 guidelines for Lamar County, Texas, where Paris is located. To qualify under the 30 percent rule, a family of four must not make more than $14,650. Proof of income is required.

Qualify under the other requirements for eligibility. In addition to income qualifications, you must meet the definition of a family (one person or more, with or without children), citizenship (or eligible immigration status) and no evictions in the past for criminal drug activity.

Find an apartment that meets HUD eligibility requirements for safe and clean housing, if you are approved for assistance. Use the low-rent apartment search feature on the HUD website or inquire with landlords. Apartment complexes must be approved by the Paris PHA before it will pay rent subsidies.

Sign the lease with the landlord, with a minimum term of one year, once you've met all requirements. You must then pay the security deposit. Pay your rent on time each month and follow the lease requirements.
