How to Rent an Apartment in Another City

Renting an apartment in another city is possible with the Internet. You can search for apartments in the size, amenities and location that you desire before you ever step foot in the city where you're relocating. You also have the ability to complete an application and become an approved tenant from a distance. However, you should be cautious when dealing with landlords and buildings in another city because, until you see the apartment in person, you can never be sure of what you are renting.

    Use the Internet to research areas in your new city. You can find the population, median salary and distance from your job to help you decide where you want to rent an apartment.

    Log on to a reputable Internet apartment search site and narrow down the list of available units in your new area. In addition, search for apartments in online newspapers and other sites that advertise rentals.

    Call each management office of the apartments that you like online and ask for more information, such as deposit amount and terms of the lease. Alternatively, email the office if you cannot call during work hours.

    Ask apartment managers to send you pictures of areas of the complex that are not posted in the ad and the view from the windows of the apartments for rent. Inquire about the distance from major streets and noise.

    Search the Internet for comments or complaints from residents of the apartment buildings that you are seriously considering. Place the name of a complex in a search engine with the word "complaint" next to it. Do your best to determine tenant satisfaction.

    Ask the apartment manager to send you an application to rent once you have approved of the details about the apartment that you want, if it's necessary for you to lock in a place to live before you move. You may be able to retrieve an application on the apartment's website, by fax or by email.

    Complete an application for all adult occupants. Fax it to the manager for processing, in addition to any documents requested, such as a copy of your driver's license and pay stub.

    Review the lease closely, once you are approved. Ask the manager if a clause can be included that specifies that you can cancel the lease if you are not pleased when you see the apartment in person. Offer to pay prorated rent for the days that it was off the market.

    Send a signed copy of the lease to the apartment manager, along with the first month's rent and security deposit. Request a copy of the lease after the manager has signed it to ensure that you have an apartment to move into as soon as you arrive in your new city.
