How to Apply for a Tenant Based Section 8 Voucher in Tallahassee, FL

Section 8 is a federal program to help those on low incomes afford clean, safe homes. When a landlord participates, the qualifying tenant pays around 30 to 40 percent of the rent and the Section 8 program contributes the rest. The Tallahassee Housing Authority (THA) is the agency overseeing the Section 8 program in Florida's capital city. According to the THA website, there are 1835 housing choice vouchers in the Tallahassee program. In addition, there are three special voucher programs for the disabled, those aging out of foster care and families in danger of having children removed due to unsafe housing. THA is the agency to contact when applying for a Section 8 voucher.

Contact the Tallahassee Housing Authority. The THA is located at 2940 Grady Road in Tallahassee. You can stop by the office or call 850-385-6126. Information is also available on the THA website (tallha.org), including a staff directory. Click the "Contact THA" link on the home page and scroll down the directory to the Section 8 category for staff members in this department. An email form is also available online through the contact page.

Complete the housing application. You can obtain a housing application from THA in person or print one from the website (Resources). You must provide your name, current address, Social Security number, race, contact numbers, along with a complete list of family members who will reside in the home. The application will also ask if you are disabled, along with whether or not you need handicap accessibility. You must advise if you have ever been evicted from public housing for drug or criminal activity. Income of everyone in the home must be provided. Your application can either be mailed or hand-delivered to the THA.

Check rental property listings. A complete list of available Section 8 apartments and homes for rent can be viewed on the THA website (tallha.org). From the home page, click the "Rental properties" link. The listing is divided into categories based on the number of bedrooms. Click any property address to obtain more details on amenities. Once your voucher application is approved, you can begin touring properties of interest and make your selection.
