Rent Assistance in Washington State for Single Parents

Rent assistance programs help people living with a low income get through difficult financial times. Many people living below the median income need help paying for the cost of everyday living, especially single parents who often face additional bills and unexpected expenses. The state of Washington offers rent assistance programs to help people in need. Parents can also get help through charitable programs.

Programs

The Section 8 program provides financial assistance on a continual basis. Under Section 8, parents receive a Housing Choice Voucher through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The voucher helps pay for the cost of rent through a private landlord. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program provides parents with a preloaded electronic benefits card they can use to get cash each month, which they can use to pay for the cost of rent. Applicants can also receive short-term assistance through the Diversion Cash Assistance program, which offers one-time cash grants.

Qualifications

To qualify for a rental assistance program, applicants must reside in Washington state on a full-time basis. U.S. citizens can apply for any program. Certain legal immigrants can also qualify for rent assistance if they meet the program's requirements for citizenship. Applicants will need to prove their financial need and fall under a set income level to qualify for assistance. Applicants may also need to complete in-person interviews to determine if they meet the program's standards. For example, some programs may not accept people with a criminal record.

Applying

Washington residents can apply for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, the TANF program or the Diversion Cash Assistance program online through the Washington Connection website. Residents can also complete an application in person by visiting a Community Services office in their area. After completing an application, applicants may need to provide documentation to support their residence status or income level.

Other Considerations

Charitable organizations also offer rent assistance programs. Typically, these programs provide a one-time grant that applicants can use to pay their rent or to cover other needed expenses. For example, the Spokane Salvation Army offers the Homeless Prevention Program, which provides financial assistance to needy families. Applicants complete an application in person to receive charitable assistance.
