How to Get Rent Assistance in Peoria, Illinois
Low-income residents of Peoria, Illinois, who have difficulty keeping up with their rent payments may qualify for assistance through the Peoria Public Housing or Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher programs. As of 2010, a family of four must have a total income of less than $53,350 to qualify for PHA rental assistance programs.
Instructions
Public Housing
- 1
Choose your preferred housing development. When you apply for public housing, you must choose the particular housing development for which you want to be put on the waiting list. Check the PHA website for details on Peoria housing developments, including location, size and facilities (see Resources).
2Complete a public housing application. Download and print this application from the PHA website (see Resources). On this application, you must indicate the housing development in which you wish to live and include detailed personal and financial information for you and your family. This information includes Social Security numbers for all members of your household, your family's financial information and your family's housing situation. With your application, you must include original documents, including birth certificates and Social Security cards for all of your family members, as well as proof of your income.
3Submit your application. Bring your application, along with your documents, to the PHA at 100 S. Richard Pryor Place in Peoria. The PHA will process your application and, if you qualify, put your name on the public housing waiting list.
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers
- 4
Contact the PHA. You must call the PHA to find out if it is accepting names to the waiting list. If the waiting list is closed, you must wait for the PHA to open the waiting list before you can apply. The PHA announces waiting list openings in the PJ Star and on Channel 5. If the waiting list is open, a PHA representative will set up an application appointment for you and inform you of what documents you need to bring to your appointment. Reach the PHA at 309-676-8736.
5Apply at the PHA. You must apply for Housing Choice Vouchers in person at the PHA. Expect to bring your and your family's Social Security numbers, proof of your income and assets, and official government identification to your application interview. Find the PHA at 100 S. Richard Pryor Place, Peoria. If you qualify, the PHA will put your name on its Housing Choice Voucher waiting list.
6Choose your housing. You are responsible for choosing your own rental housing. The housing you choose must meet minimum standards regarding maintenance, safety and cleanliness, and a PHA inspector will check your housing to ensure it meets those standards. Once you find appropriate housing, you, your landlord and the PHA must sign contracts regarding rental and voucher amounts as well as landlord and tenant responsibilities.
