Social Security Disability and Housing Assistance
While receiving Social Security disability benefits provides you with cash income, it doesn't guarantee that you will be able to secure affordable housing for yourself and your family. To find low-cost housing, contact local public housing and social service agencies for help. In some areas, a disability can qualify you for housing assistance and subsidies.
Social Security Disability
There are two disability benefit programs administered by the Social Security Administration: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Both provide monthly income to recipients who are permanently disabled and cannot work. SSDI is available to workers who qualify for Social Security benefits regardless of income, while SSI is only available to people who have very low incomes and few or no assets. The Social Security Administration does not provide recipients with housing assistance, but if you receive benefits from either or both programs, particularly SSI, you may receive priority for housing programs.
Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers
Some public housing authorities provide housing assistance to the disabled. If you contact one of these agencies for help, be sure to mention that you receive SSI or SSDI benefits so that your caseworker can match you with any programs serving people with disabilities. You may qualify for subsidized housing that is managed by the public housing authority, or you may be able to get a Housing Choice (Section 8) voucher that you can use to pay for housing from a private landlord.
USDA Rural Development Housing
If you live in a rural area, are elderly or disabled and live on a small income, you may be entitled to participate in the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development Rental Assistance program. If you qualify for the program, you can live in a building that was financed by the USDA's Rural Development Housing and Community Facilities Programs. Your rent will never be more than 30 percent of your monthly income. To apply for the program, you should contact the USDA Rural Development office in your area.
Housing Counseling Agencies
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approves housing counseling agencies that can help you find suitable rental housing in your area. The services offered by these agencies vary, but they may be able to inform you about housing options for the disabled in your area as well as programs that can help you pay your rent.
