How to Write a Notice of Not Renewing Your Apartment Lease

Though renters aren't always required to give notice of the intent to vacate, it may make things easier on the landlord and cover you legally if you do so. Once you've written the letter, give it to the landlord or property manager as soon as possible. Be sure you want to leave before you deliver the letter, because once new tenants have signed a lease, you definitely have to move out.

Instructions

Start the letter with a greeting such as "Dear Mr. Smith" or "Dear Jack," depending on how well you know landlord or property manger.

Write the reason for the letter in the first sentence. For example, say "I have decided not to renew my lease."

Include the date you are planning to be out of the apartment. Use the wording, "This letter is notice of my intent to vacate on" and then give the date.

Write why you're leaving, if you want to explain. This is not required.

Ask the landlord to return the security deposit and include your forwarding address.

Choose a closing such as Thanks, Yours or Yours truly, then sign your name.

Mail the letter to your landlord with signature delivery confirmation to serve as evidence that you gave him notice of your intent to vacate.
