How to Write an Economic Hardship Letter to Landlord

How to Write an Economic Hardship Letter to Landlord

There are many reasons why tenants experience economic hardships. For example, hardships could be caused by an illness, loss of job, reduced income, divorce, death of a spouse or a medical emergency. Whether your situation is temporary or permanent, it's important to send your landlord a letter for help. In sending a letter, you might be able to avoid further delinquent rent payments and find a way to resolve the situation.

Instructions

    1

List the events in chronological order that caused your economic hardship. Use scratch paper to write down the events and any relevant information to form an accurate timeline. This information will later prove useful when writing to your landlord.

    2

Include your name and contact information. If you don't have preprinted letterhead, type your name, address and phone number two to four lines down from the top of the page.

    3

Address your landlord in a formal manner. Maintain a polite and respectful tone.

    4

Acknowledge the economic hardship. Explain the event and cause of your financial hardship. For example, the hardship could be caused by an illness, loss of job, reduced income, divorce or medical bills. Gather information from your chronological list to provide dates and details involving the hardship. Mention whether the hardship is temporary or if it might be permanent. Enclose documents that offer proof of economic hardship, such as copies of the last three months of bank-account statements, late notices received in the past six months, proof of income and the past two years of income tax returns. Anything that supports your claim should be included with your hardship letter.

    5

Describe what you're doing to resolve the economic hardship. For example, mention if you're looking for a job or are expecting money in the future. Your landlord wants to see that you're taking steps to improve the situation.

    6

Ask politely for help. Ask your landlord for an extension or a reduction in the cost of rent if needed. If you expect your financial hardship to be permanent, suggests ways you can resolve the situation. For example, offer to repay the outstanding balance in the future or offer your help with any maintenance work for the landlord's other tenants. This could include repair work, bringing the garbage cans to the curb for pickup or mowing the lawn. Do anything you can to avoid being evicted from your place of residence.

    7

Sign the letter. Deliver it promptly to your landlord. Hand-deliver the letter if possible. Otherwise, send it through certified mail to ensure that the letter was received.
