How to Apply for Section 8 Vouchers in Houston, TX

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides assistance through the Housing Choice Voucher program, which subsidizes the cost of housing for low-income families and individuals. Agencies known as "public housing authorities" (PHAs) are widespread through the United States to oversee the program at the local level for HUD. Often, they have waiting lists, as there are more people in need than there is federal funding available. Houston has two PHAs where you should go to apply for the assistance.

Contact the Harris County Housing Authority at the 8933 Interchange location (713-578-2100) or the Houston Housing Authority at 2640 Fountain View (713-260-0500). Ask whether either agency is taking Section 8 voucher applications. HUD allows PHAs to stop accepting applications to keep the waiting list from growing too long. Inquire whether you can put your name down for a voucher on both waiting lists.

Complete the Housing Choice Voucher application at the public housing authority, if possible. The longer you delay returning the form, the higher the number of applicants who will get in front of you on the waiting list. The application asks for identification and financial information for each person in your household. You have to show proof of your answers, in the form of pay stubs, birth certificates and social security cards, when a voucher becomes available.

Submit the Section 8 voucher application to the PHA. Update the office of your location whenever your address, telephone number and email address change. If it is your turn to get a housing voucher, but the staff cannot find you, the voucher will go to the next person on the waiting list.
