Can I Get Public Housing?

Public housing is government-owned apartments and houses that is set aside for low-income people. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides funding and the basic rights and responsibilities of public housing. However, local housing authorities actually administer the program and specify eligibility criteria. You must qualify for public housing under your local housing authority's guidelines.

Income

    Income qualification for public housing depends on your household income and size. You may be eligible for public housing if your income is at or below 80 to 50 percent of the median income in your area. Contact your local housing authority to get the exact income threshold in your location.

Citizenship

    You can only only apply for public housing if you are a U.S. citizen or a lawful immigrant who has been in the country for at least five years. Some housing authorities only require one adult member of the household to be a citizen or permanent immigrant.

Criminal Record

    People who are registered sex offenders cannot qualify for public housing. The severity of other crimes that disqualify you vary by state and housing authority. Most public housing programs do not allow felons to live in pubic housing within 5 years of being convicted but some bar felons from ever obtaining public housing. Most housing authorities allow people with non-violent misdemeanors to qualify for public housing.

Background Check

    You must pass a background check to qualify for public housing. This involves a criminal record check in addition to contacting previous landlords and other references, such as utility companies, to ensure you will be a good tenant and have no outstanding payments due. Problems in previous residences, unpaid rent or utility bills or evictions from other public housing programs may disqualify you.
