How to Get a Rent Decrease
Typically, when people are facing a downturn in finances, one of the first things they do is cut back on expenses. While decreasing or eliminating expenses such as cable television and telephone bills can go a long way toward increasing the amount of available money you have each month, these extraneous expenses are not mandatory for your existence. Adequate housing is essential to most people's well-being, so keep in mind during your rent negotiations that requesting a rent decrease could cause you to lose your apartment if your landlord has people waiting to move in.

Talk to neighbors and look at local classified ads to determine the average rent for similar properties. Compare the amount to what you are currently paying. If you are paying more than average for rent, you have negotiating power with your landlord.
2Write a household budget to help determine how much money you have available to pay for rent. The U.S. Department of Education provides a budget calculator that allows you to input all of your income and expenses to assist you in completing a budget.
3Write a letter to your landlord informing him of the current local rental rates. Request the amount of decrease you want and offer to meet with the landlord to discuss lowering your rent. Provide your phone number in case a face-to-face meeting is not possible.
4Meet with the landlord and offer to trade services for part of your rent. Landlords may accept your offer if the property has problems that you can repair, but it will depend on your local housing laws and the preferences of your landlord. Municipalities such as Santa Monica, California, allow tenants to petition the housing court for a rent decrease if a property is in need of repair.
5Find a rental with lower rent. If your landlord will not negotiate with you to decrease your rent, look for another property that fits into your budget. Typically, the more vacant properties that a landlord has, the more he is willing to negotiate.
