Financial Assistance for Paying Rent
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides financial assistance to help qualified households pay for rent. These rental subsidy programs provide ongoing financial assistance as long as the family meets the eligibility requirements. The family must be low-income to participate in these financial assistance programs. The public housing authority administers HUD rental subsidy programs, and you will need to get in contact with the one closest to you to obtain an application.
HUD Rental Subsidy Programs
HUD has two rental subsidy programs that help low-income families pay their rent. The Public Housing Program provides a subsidized unit to qualified households. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides a rental subsidy to the family. The family is able to choose any home they wish to rent and still have the rent subsidized. The family's income cannot exceed 80 percent of the area median income, however, families in lower income brackets may be given a priority for help.
Temporary Rental Assistance
The Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program helps homeless families and those at-risk of becoming homeless secure permanent housing. Families facing foreclosure are eligible for help, however, this is not a mortgage subsidy program, and they will need to use the money toward obtaining a rental unit. The family can get a grant to pay for up to 18 months of rent. The money also can be used to pay for a security deposit, a moving truck and storage fees. The family's income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area median income to qualify for help.
Homeowner's Transition Assistance
Homeowners who have sold their home to avoid a foreclosure may be eligible to receive money to pay for relocation expenses. The Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives Program provides up to $3,000 to homeowners who have sold their home. To qualify for help, the home must have been their primary place of residence. Homeowners who reside in states that received Hardest Hit Funds also can receive transition assistance. The homeowner's income cannot exceed low to moderate income limit levels. The money can be used for rent, security deposits and other moving expenses.
Help for Veteran Families
HUD has provided 20,000 Section 8 vouchers to the Department of Veteran Affairs to help homeless veterans afford safe and decent housing. The HUD-VASH voucher subsidizes a portion of the veteran's rent. The veteran must agree to participate in case management services to get financial assistance for paying rent. The Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program also helps veterans get into an affordable housing unit, however, the housing grant is provided one time only. The money can be used for rent, a security deposit and other costs of moving. The veteran's income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area median income to qualify for help. The family also is provided help with child care, health care or transportation services to ensure they can maintain their residential stability.
