How to Get Qualified for Government HUD Homes

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has several programs to help low-income families rent safe, affordable housing. Low-rent apartments are available through a program that makes direct payments to private apartment owners who reduce rents for low-income tenants. Qualified tenants may also rent public housing managed by HUD Public Housing Authorities. The Housing Choice Voucher program subsidizes the rent for any home a tenant chooses. If you're interested in qualifying for a HUD home, you'll undergo an application process to determine your eligibility.

Instructions

    1

Contact your local PHA to find out which program best meets your needs. (See Resources.)

    2

Create a file for the information you'll need for your HUD application.

    3

List the names of everyone who will live in the unit and note each person's birth date and relationship to the head of your household. Obtain each person's birth certificate.

    4

Add any special hardships and other circumstances that might increase your family's chances of qualifying. You might mention that you are currently living in substandard housing or a member of the household is disabled or a veteran. Obtain documentation for your claims, such as medical or military service records.

    5

Estimate your family's income for the coming year. List all sources of income, including wages, investments, alimony, child support, disability benefits and pensions. Obtain a copy of your most recent tax return to support your income claims.

    6

List references who can verify your income and your family composition, such as employers, personal references and the banks where you keep your checking and savings accounts. Other references to submit include your current and previous landlords and their contact information.

    7

Prepare your home for a visit from a PHA representative. Although not all HUD housing applicants are subject to in-home visits, your PHA might need to assess your current situation and verify the information on your application.

    8

Schedule an appointment with the PHA to apply for HUD housing.
