How to Get Help With Rent While Unemployed

When you do not have a job, it is only a matter of time before you may need help with securing basic needs such as housing. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development can offer rental assistance through the Housing Choice Voucher Program or public housing properties. HUD's mission is to help low-income families and individuals have an affordable and safe place to live to help clients become self-sufficient.

    Meet the eligibility criteria. To receive rental assistance, you must qualify by meeting the income and citizenship requirements. HUD's website states that the agency takes the size of your family and annual gross income into consideration when determining if you meet the criteria. Those who are eligible for rental assistance have a total family income that is no more than 50 percent of the median income for your area. You will have a better chance of receiving rental assistance while you are unemployed if your family income is 30 percent or less of your area's median income. Because median income levels vary by location, it is best to ask a public housing authority representative about your area's income limits for the size of your family.

    You must also be a U.S. citizen or an eligible immigrant. Immigrants who are eligible are those who are in the country as a refugee or because they have sought asylum. You may also qualify for rental assistance if you are unemployed and disabled or over the age of 65.

    Live in a HUD-approved property. To receive rental assistance, you must live or plan to live in a rental property deemed as public housing or in a private rental property where the owner accepts Housing Choice Vouchers. Depending on your income status, if you qualify to receive rental assistance, you may have to pay a portion of the rent even if you are unemployed if you have a large amount of assets.

    Call your local public housing agency to apply for rental assistance. Depending on the agency, you may need to schedule an appointment to apply for rental assistance or you may schedule an appointment after filling out an application. In the application, you will need to submit proof of income, the names and personal information of those in your household and information regarding your assets, such as money saved in the bank. You will also need to include your latest employer's contact information so the agency can verify that you are unemployed. If you qualify for rental assistance, you may receive help immediately. If there is a great need in your area for such assistance, your name will be included on a public housing authority waiting list.
