Housing for People on Social Security Disability
Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, provides monthly payments to some people who cannot work for at least one whole year due to a disability of some kind. Not all disabled people qualify for SSDI; people must have worked and paid Social Security taxes in the past in order to qualify. The amount people can receive each month in disability payments depends on how much they earned when they worked. Some people on SSDI have no trouble securing housing, but others receive low monthly payments or need help with activities of daily living due to their disabilities and may need help with housing.
Private Housing
Some people on Social Security Disability Insurance live in private housing. They may own a house that they bought before becoming disabled or they may live in an apartment with rent they can afford to pay with their disability payments. People on SSDI can also work part-time and earn a limited amount of money while still receiving disability benefits; they can use that money to help pay for their housing. Alternatively, they may live with family members or friends who pay for their housing.
Section 8 Housing
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development help people with low incomes, including some people on Social Security Disability Insurance, pay for rental housing. Landlords must agree to accept the vouchers, and as long as they do, recipients can live anywhere they like. People must apply for Section 8 at their local public housing authority.
Group Homes
Some people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance live in group homes. They live in homes in residential areas with other people with similar disabilities where they receive full-time support and assistance from trained staff. They need too much help to live on their own but don't need nursing home care. People on SSDI living in group homes may have lost their vision or hearing, suffered brain damage or other physical disabilities, making them unable to work, at least for a time.
Nursing Homes
Some severely disabled people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance live in nursing homes where they receive around-the-clock care. Generally, in order to be admitted to a nursing home, one must require skilled nursing care. Skilled nursing care includes things like intravenous injections, Foley catheter insertions, pain management, dressing changes or patient teaching. Not all people with disabilities require skilled nursing care, and they would not likely be admitted to nursing homes but would have to find other housing.
