Government Assistance in New Hampshire for Apartments for Single Parents
As a parent, you want to provide your child with safe housing. As a single parent, you may struggle to afford an apartment in a decent area. The high cost of rent in good areas can be too much for low-income parents. The New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority offers two programs to help parents rent safe and decent apartments for their children and themselves.
Programs
The Housing Choice Voucher program subsidizes the cost of renting a privately owned apartment. The voucher program, a federally funded program managed on a state level, allows New Hampshire to pay the majority of the rent payment, and the tenant pays the remainder to the landlord. New Hampshire also offers the ACCESS program, a division of the Housing Choice Voucher program that offers assistance directly to the disabled. Recipients can choose from any approved apartment. The Emergency Housing Program provides grants to cover rent payments when a parent faces an emergency, such as an eviction. Applicants can receive assistance for up to three months, according to the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority.
Eligibility
Parents must have a low income to qualify. The New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority states that an applicant's income cannot exceed 50 percent of the median income in their county or city. Applicants who have an income of 30 percent or less than the median income in their area receive preference. To qualify for emergency assistance, applicants must prove a serious financial need. All applicants must also pass a background check. The New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority will not approve applicants with a sexual offender status, or those with current or past drug or criminal problems.
Applying
Parents must complete a rental assistance application form and submit it to a local New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority office. A caseworker will review the application and conduct an interview with the applicant. If approved, the applicant will go on a wait list. Once the applicant reaches the top of the wait list, he will have 60 days to find approved housing and start receiving assistance, according to the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority.
Warnings
The amount of applications the finance authority receives typically surpasses the amount of funding the agency has available. As a result, applicants can wait several months or years before receiving a Housing Choice Voucher. The New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority reports that, as of 2011, applicants could wait an estimated six to eight years before receiving assistance. Parents can receive emergency assistance faster, but the emergency assistance program also fills up quickly. Parents should apply for either program as soon as they anticipate a need.
