Utah Housing Grants for Single Parents
Grants to assist single-parent families with housing in Utah range from public housing units to Section 8 housing vouchers which can be used to supplement rent for the housing of one's choice. Stable housing for low-income families is the goal of many programs in Utah and single parents wishing to find affordable housing can find assistance through both public and private agencies.
Federal Section 8 Government-Assisted Housing
Utah has housing units funded by government grants for low-income single parents. Tenants pay a percentage of their gross income as rent and the remaining portion is paid by the Federal Section 8 program. A list of such housing is available at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website. Tenants apply for these units by contacting the housing management directly. These grants are housing-based, meaning they are attached to the housing, as opposed to voucher programs which are tenant-based, meaning they are attached to the tenant and move with him.
Federal Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers
The Federal Section 8 Voucher Program gives housing vouchers to low-income single parents, which are then used for housing of tenants' choice. Like government-assisted housing, tenants pay a percentage of their gross income as rent and the remainder of the rent is paid to the landlord by HUD. To apply for these vouchers, tenants must contact the Public Housing Agency (PHA) in the area of desired residency. The HUD website provides contact information for all of the PHA's in Utah. More populated areas have waiting lists; rural areas have vouchers more readily available. After one year, Section 8 Voucher recipients can "transfer out" to another city without waiting lists or penalties, if those cities are accepting new Section 8 tenants.
Local Housing Authorities and Public Housing
Local housing authorities throughout Utah are operated and owned by local governments in cooperation with the state and offer low-income rental units to single parents, similar to federally-funded Section 8 government-assisted housing. These units are available through 19 local housing authority offices which are listed at the Affordable Housing Online website. Tenants pay a portion of their gross income as rent. The Housing Authority of the City of Salt Lake is an example of a local housing authority which owns several properties and rents them to low-income families at reduced rates.
Home Ownership Grants and Private Rental Assistance
The Utah Housing Corporation (UHC) offers grants for down payments and closing costs to single-parent, first-time, low-income home buyers. Through September 2012, funding is available in Utah to either prevent families from becoming homeless or to get them back into housing with the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program and Temporary Assistance For Needy Families Emergency Fund. This program is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Private agencies such as the Salvation Army, Saint Vincent de Paul and Catholic Community Services often have programs to assist local residents with housing costs as well.
