Rent Assistance for Single Moms in New Hampshire
Affordable housing in New Hampshire costs no more than 30 percent of an individual's income -- and, at the time of publication, only 11 percent of New Hampshire's housing stock is affordable, according to the 2010 report "Homelessness in New Hampshire," published by the Emergency Shelter and Homeless Coordination Commission of the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. Single mothers who earn below $35,100 annually may have difficulty retaining rental units. New Hampshire's government and private organizations offer financial relief to qualified applicants.
Emergency Rental Assistance
Emergency assistance programs provide financial support to single mothers facing an eviction. The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services administers the Financial Assistance for Needy Families program. Single mothers seeking to prevent homelessness must submit an application, proof of the emergency and the amount required to prevent eviction. The program pays up to a two-month rental arrearage once in a 12-month period. At the time of publication, the program also pays up to $650 toward a security deposit. The New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority also offers an emergency program that provides up to three months' of assistance. The program makes funds available if a single mother exhausts all other options.
Long-Term Assistance
The New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority administers the federal housing assistance program. The program delivers a subsidy to qualified applicants through the Housing Choice Voucher program. Income and household composition determine eligibility. A single mother's income cannot exceed 30 percent of the median area income, but the authority accepts some applicants with incomes below 50 percent of the median. Applicants must submit a preliminary application, which adds an applicant's name to a wait list. The wait to receive a voucher can take up to eight years, according to the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority.
Family Assistance Program
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services also offers the Family Assistance Program, which helps single mothers with a permanent disability or long-term challenges obtaining employment, according to the agency. The program does not require employment to qualify and offers cash assistance.
General Considerations
Single mothers must meet the guidelines and requirements for each program. The programs provide funding to persons with low and very low income. Applicants should collect the required documentation, such as income verification, birth certificates and identification for each member of the household.
