I'm Moving & I Don't Know Where to Start My Apartment Hunt
The process of moving -- whether it's across the street or across the country -- can be overwhelming, particularly when it comes to finding a new place to live. Location, amenities and, of course, budget all play a role in finding the right apartment. Start the apartment-hunting by searching the Internet, scoping out places in person and asking around for recommendations, including from professionals.
Real Estate Agents
Real estate agents aren't just for those in the market to buy a house -- they can help you find a rental, too. A professional can be particularly helpful if you're relocating from a distance and don't know the neighborhoods or apartment complex options. A real estate agent, after pointing you in the right direction, can also help negotiate rent, security deposit or lease length, according to the Wall Street Journal, as well as avoid a landlord in or near foreclosure.
The Internet
With the Internet, your new community is at your fingertips -- no matter how far away it is, geographically. Begin your search with websites devoted specifically to apartment rentals to see what's out there. You can begin to narrow down some options based on floor plans, photos, policies and rent. Once you've chosen a few stand-outs, continue your web research by checking out community message boards, where you can seek feedback from local residents, the Chamber of Commerce website, which can give you a sense of the businesses in the area, and the police department website, which will give you a sense of the safety of the area.
Visit the Area
If you're moving long-distance, it's not always possible to spend a lot of time in your new city. While you can ask a friend or real estate agent to scope it out, aim to make at least one to two visits before signing a lease. Photos and video tours only show so much, and it's easy to hide problems like mold, a loud neighbor dog or rude apartment management staff. If you can't make it to the city beforehand, consider living in temporary housing, such as a long-term hotel, so you can get to know the area and potential living spaces.
Word-of-Mouth Recommendations
The most reliable of recommendations come from people you know who have lived in or near the apartment building or complex you're considering. If you live in the area, ask around before you start your apartment search to get an idea of places with a good reputation. A solid recommendation can prevent you from moving into an apartment notorious for intruding landlords or cockroaches.
