Help With Rent for a Single Mom

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides affordable housing options to low-income families. Single moms who have limited income can apply for help to pay their rent. You can contact the local public housing authority to find out if a rental subsidy is available for which you can apply. The counselor can also recommend other housing solutions offered through the local government or community-based organizations.

Public Housing Program

    The Public Housing Program provides a project-based rental subsidy to HUD-owned and privately-owned multifamily properties. Tenants who live in these housing units are given a rental subsidy to make their rent more affordable. Low-income single moms are eligible for help. The mother is responsible for paying 30 percent of her income toward rent. HUD pays the remaining portion of rent. To qualify for a rental subsidy the mom's income cannot exceed 80 percent of the area median income. The mom must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.

Section 8 Voucher Program

    HUD's Section 8 Voucher Program is similar to the Public Housing's rental assistance program. The family is able to have rent subsidized; however, the rental subsidy is not attached to a specific multifamily housing property. The mom is able to move to any desired rental housing and get help with paying her rent. The program's goal is to integrate low-income families into mixed income housing. The tenant is still responsible for paying 30 percent of her income toward rent.

Second Chance Homes

    A Second Chance Home is a place for teenage mothers to live and get supportive services to help them become independent. This group home environment is supervised by adults. The girls are provided with case management services in addition to housing. To participate in the program the mom must agree to obtain her high school diploma or GED. The applicant will get help with childcare, transportation and job skills training. The program typically targets girls from the age of 14 to 20 and those receiving welfare assistance to participate in the program. This program is administered through community-based organizations.

Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program

    Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Homelessness and Rapid Re-Housing Program provides money for homeless families and those at risk of becoming homeless to secure permanent housing. The money can be used to pay for rent, a security deposit, utility fees and other moving expenses. The mom's income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area median income to qualify for help. A motel voucher can also be provided for up to 30 days while the family transitions to permanent housing.
