Help Paying Rent for Senior Citizens

Help Paying Rent for Senior Citizens

A senior citizen living on a fixed income may face challenges managing rising housing costs. Seniors may obtain rental assistance through various government agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development including local branches of HUD's Public Housing Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Section 8 Housing Voucher

Unlike low-income public housing, a Section 8 housing voucher allows low-income families to find their own housing and pay a part or all of the rent using the voucher. This way, seniors may obtain rental assistance and remain in their current rental instead of moving to designated low-income public housing. When considering applications for Section 8 housing vouchers, HUD tends to give priority to applicants who are homeless, those who are elderly, and those with extremely low-incomes. Applicants must meet certain income limits to qualify, and those limits vary according to household size and location. For example, as of the date of publication, the income limit for a low-income, four-person household in Chicago is $59,850, whereas the limit is $41,300 for a family of comparable size in Columbus, Georgia. Seniors may determine where to apply for a housing voucher via the HUD website.

State-Sponsored Programs

In addition to federal rental assistance programs, some state and local governments sponsor rental assistance programs specifically for senior citizens. For example, New York Citys Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption program excuses senior citizens from future rent increases. However, you must meet certain income limits to qualify for these programs. As of the date of publication, elderly residents qualify for New York Citys SCRIE program only if they earn no more than $29,000 annually. Seniors may find local rental assistance programs in their state of residence and determine where to apply by visiting the HUD website or their local office of HUD's Public Housing Agency.

Rural Rental Assistance

The Department of Agricultures rural rental assistance program provides rental assistance for low-income and elderly individuals who are unable to pay monthly rent. An applicant's rent must be within 30 percent of her monthly income to qualify for rural rental assistance. Additionally, applicants must live in an area with a population of 20,000 residents or less to be eligible for rural rental assistance. Applicants may locate the local service center at which to apply for rental assistance by visiting the USDA website.

Disabled Seniors

Seniors with disabilities may be eligible for affordable housing and rental assistance designated specifically for individuals with disabilities. Elderly veterans may be eligible for separate housing vouchers, such as the HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing voucher. In some instances, seniors who are disabled may use the rental assistance programs described above jointly with rental assistance programs for disabled individuals. You may find these various rental assistance programs for people with disabilities at disability.gov.
