What Is Low-Rent Public Housing?

Low-rent public housing refers to properties provided by the government that low-income, disabled and elderly individuals and families can use by paying a low rent. To obtain low-rent public housing, you have to meet certain eligibility criteria. Depending on your area, you may also have to get on a waiting list before getting a property to rent.

Features

    The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) establishes low-rent public housing to provide safe and proper housing for low-income families, the elderly and individuals with disabilities. As of 2011, about 1.2 million households live in low-rent public housing.

Eligibility

    To ensure that public housing goes to those who really need it, the HUD has eligibility guidelines for applicants. To qualify for public housing, you have to meet requirements relating to your income, age or disability. The income limits depend on the income level of your county or metropolitan area. You also have to provide references so the housing agency can determine whether you will be a responsible tenant.

Process

    To take part in the low-rent public housing program, you have to contact your local housing agency and submit an application. You need to provide personal details of every person who will live with you and you may have to attend an interview with the housing agency representative. Depending on your local housing agency, you may only be able to apply during certain time periods and you may have to get on a waiting list after being approved. When a property becomes available for you, you sign a lease and move in.

Restrictions

    To maintain your low-rent public housing, you may have to comply with the restrictions set by the housing agency. For example, the City of Faribault in Minnesota requires that you join an economic self-sufficiency program or complete a minimum number of hours of community service every month. There may also be restrictions regarding the pets you can keep. When your household income goes up beyond the income limit for low-rent public housing, you may have to move out.
