Things to Consider When Renting an Apartment During College

No college student wants to live in on-campus housing all four (or five, or six) years of college, but before you decide to rent an apartment, know what you're signing up for. Renting an apartment during college is an expensive endeavor, and it may not be the right choice for everyone.

Can You Afford It?

    Before you start packing your bags, make sure you can really afford to rent an apartment. Moving into your first apartment is an expensive transition, one that comes with stiff upfront costs. Deposits on an apartment and utilities can easily double or triple your first month's rent. And even if you comb the yard sales and thrift stores, furnishing your new place is going to cost some money, too.

Is It Really Cheaper to Live Off-Campus?

    It's no secret that on-campus housing is no longer as inexpensive as it used to be, but that doesn't mean it's more expensive than living off-campus. When comparing on-campus housing fees and off-campus apartment costs, compare apples to apples. That $800 rent payment may seem small when split three ways, but when you figure in the cost of utilities, transportation and furnishings, it's probably cheaper to stay in the dorm. There's also the standard one-year lease to consider; unless you and your roommates all plan to stay in your apartment all summer long, be prepared to pay the landlord even if you're off-site.

How Well Do You Know Your Roommates?

    If you're a college student, chances are moving into an apartment will be too expensive to do alone, meaning you'll need roommates. But even if you can afford to move into a new place, are you sure your potential roommates can? Before you sign a lease, make sure your roommates are financially stable. Ask how they plan to pay their part of the bills and what other financial obligations they have.

Are You Ready to Be On Your Own?

    Renting an apartment involves responsibility. If you have trouble paying bills on time, can't say no to a party, and have been known to trash your dorm rooms, then renting an apartment may not be the best decision. Not paying utility and rent bills on time can destroy your credit, and hosting wild parties can result in lost security deposits and other expenses that you may not be able to afford.
