Programs That Help People With Apartments in the Bronx
The city and several non-profit agencies help low-income residents of the Bronx pay rent or make energy-efficient upgrades to their apartments. To qualify for these programs, you must meet the income limit requirements. These income limits are based on the Federal poverty level standards. During the application process, you are required to provide documentation of income to determine eligibility.
Home Base Homeless Prevention Program
Non-profit agencies in the Bronx administer the Home Base program to help families that have fallen behind on their rent to keep their housing. Families at risk of becoming homeless can get temporary financial assistance to pay their rent. The family will work with a case manager who coordinates all the services needed for the family to stay in their home. Some of these services include landlord mediation, child care, employment or legal services. The family's income cannot exceed 200 percent of the Federal poverty to qualify for help. They must also provide documentation that they are at-risk of losing their housing.
Weatherization Assistance Program
The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition works with the U.S. Department of Energy to provide weatherization services to low-income renters in the Bronx. Weatherization work helps to reduce utility bills. Weatherization measures includes sealing air leaks, replacing heating and cooling systems and installation of energy-efficient lighting. At least half the tenants in the building must have income at or below 200 percent of the Federal poverty level for you to receive weatherization services. You must verify your income with pay stubs to determine your eligibility for help.
Emergency Repair Loan
Landlords that own a 1- to 4-unit apartment or 5- 20-unit mixed use building in the Bronx may qualify for an emergency repair loan from the Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City. The landlords with 1 to 4 units can qualify for a low-interest loan of up to $10,000 with a five-year term. Owners of 5- to 20-unit buildings can apply for a loan of up to $20,000 at one percent interest. The financing can go toward repairing the water main, plumbing, roof or other health and safety deficiencies. The landlord must provide proof of ownership and a $50 application fee to apply for the loan.
Opportunity NYC
The Opportunity NYC program administered through the MDRC and Seedco provides monetary incentives for low-income families to complete activities related to education, health, employment and training. Incentive payments range from $25 for attending parent-teacher conferences to $150 a month for maintaining a full-time job. To participate in the program, a family must have at least one child in fourth, seventh, or ninth grade in a New York City Public school. The family's total household income cannot exceed 130 percent of the Federal poverty level. The family must be U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens to qualify for the program.
