How to Get Approved for Section 8 if You're Homeless

Section 8 is a federally funded program through the department of Housing and Urban Development that helps low-income families find safe and affordable housing. The program pays a portion of the rent, called a "subsidy," to help defray the cost. If you are homeless and considered low-income, HUD can help you.

Instructions

    1

Obtain an application. Locate the address of your local Public Housing Agency. Download and print the application from the HUD website (hud.gov), or pick one up from your local office. Help is also available in the meantime through many local community centers, and counselors can offer assistance with food, temporary shelter and applying for public housing.

    2

Complete the application. Many people apply for this program every day, and space on the lists are limited. To qualify for the Section 8 program your gross income cannot be more than 50 percent of the median income in the city where you live. The rent subsidy is based on 30 percent of the total income, with the vouchers covering the remaining amount. If you have no income, the subsidy will cover the rent entirely until you start making money; then, it will be adjusted to 30 percent of your total income.

    3

Return the application to the PHA as soon as possible. Bring in all the documentation you have including identification, social security cards, proof of income for all family members, proof of eviction to support homelessness or any other proof. Single mothers with children, disabled, elderly people and homeless families are considered a priority.

    4

Request an intake interview. Since you are homeless and may not have access to a phone or mail services, if you do not get interviewed on the spot they may schedule an intake appointment for you within a few days.

    5

Search for apartments that accept Section 8 vouchers. The PHA has a list of eligible properties and will qualify you for a unit based on the number of family members. Typically, it is measured as two people per bedroom. Call or visit the properties on the list and submit an application.
