How to Apply for Low Income Housing in Milwaukee

Housing costs can eat up a major portion of many families' monthly budget. Low-income residents of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, may find it difficult to find suitable and safe housing that is within their budget. The Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee offers a variety of assistance to low- and moderate-income households. The Housing Authority offers both rental assistance and assistance purchasing a home for those who qualify.

Low-Income Rental Assistance

    Research the available programs to determine which program applies to your situation. Milwaukee offers low income, low income for the elderly or disabled and moderate income veterans' housing. Obtain information on each program through the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee website or by calling 414-286-5678.

    Gather the documents that will be needed to complete the appropriate application. Proof of current income as well as Social Security numbers for all household members will be needed.

    Complete the appropriate application which may be obtained through the Housing Authority website or by calling 414-286-5678.

    Mail the completed application to the Housing Authority City of Milwaukee-Resident Selection, P.O. Box 324, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53201.

Low-Income Homeownership Assistance

    Determine which homeownership program applies to your situation. Milwaukee offers two programs. The first is for current housing choice voucher recipients; the second is for current residents of one of the city's public housing units.

    Confirm that you meet all requirements of the program. Each program requires an applicant to be employed at least 30 hours per week with an annual income of at least $15,000 (as of May 2011) but less than 80 percent of the county median income. The applicant must also be a first-time home buyer or not have owned a home within the last three years in most cases. Applicants must also be current with their rent and in compliance with all obligations under their lease.

    Complete the appropriate application. The application may be downloaded from the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee's website or requested by calling 414-286-5678.

    Return the completed application to the Housing Authority for the City of Milwaukee, Homeownership Program, 2363 N. 50th St., Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53210.
