Housing Assistance Guide for Disabled Adults in Fort Worth
Disabled adults have the right to own or rent a home that meets their needs, as long as they have the ability to pay. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 makes that clear, forbidding housing discrimination due to disability, national origin or gender. Fort Worth, Texas, has financial assistance available for the low-income disabled to help meet the goal of independent living. You can also get help to find a home that's accessible and that accepts the help you're eligible for, and there's even assistance to help you transition into buying your own home.
Housing Choice Vouchers
Housing Choice Vouchers, formerly known as Section 8, are offered through Fort Worth's public housing authority offices. The housing vouchers are available to low-income disabled households, along with households with elderly members (age 65 or over) or children. Low-income is defined as a percentage of Fort Worth's median income; in 2011 the median income for a four-person household in Fort Worth was $68,300. If you're approved for a voucher, you can rent any unit that will accept the vouchers and that the housing authority offices approve as safe and healthy. The voucher is paid directly to the landlord, and you're responsible for any difference.
Public Housing
Fort Worth Housing Authority manages 1,320 public housing units over nine housing sites, two of which (Fair Oaks Apartments and Hunter Plaza Apartments) are designated specifically for the elderly and disabled. Access to public housing is based on income, and you must be a federally recognized displaced person, or age 62 or older, or disabled or a family with children. The maximum income for a one-person household is $36,950; the maximum for a two-person household is $42,250 as of 2011. To apply, you must fill out an application and return it to the Fort Worth Housing Authority office.
Homeownership
Fort Worth also offers a homeownership program. This is in conjunction with the housing choice voucher program. Eligibility is based on receiving the housing choice vouchers for one year or more, meeting the minimum income requirements (for the disabled, the minimum is $10,300), being a first-time home buyer, having the funds to pay a 3 percent down payment and personally funding 1 percent of the down payment. You also need to attend homeownership training and counseling. The Fort Worth Housing Authority also offers a homeownership program to those living in public housing.
Homeless Disabled
Fort Worth also offers a program for homeless people who are disabled. Called Shelter Plus Care, this program provides rental assistance that's matched by local organizations including the Salvation Army and Samaritan Housing. This program assists more than 400 individuals and families, and program participants can receive funds for as long as they need to. You can apply for the Shelter Plus Care program with a participating organization.
