Government Help With Paying Rent

Government Help With Paying Rent

Several government agencies provide help to low-income families with paying rent. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) establishes income limits for every county in the U.S. based on the area median income. Most government programs that help to pay rent require that the household's total income be 80 percent of the area median income or less. Families with lower income are given priority. You can contact a HUD-approved counselor for help to determine if you qualify for rental assistance in your area.

HUD Rental Subsidy Programs

HUD has two rental subsidy programs. The Public Housing Program provides a rental subsidy for multifamily and single-family housing. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides a rental subsidy to tenants. For both programs, the tenant is responsible for paying 30 percent of the total household income income toward rent. You can get more information on the availability of these subsidy programs in your area at your local public housing authority.

Temporary Rental Assistance

HUD's Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program helps homeless families and those at-risk of becoming homeless to secure permanent housing. Temporary grants can be used to pay for rent, back rent, security deposits, a moving van, storage fees and utility fees. Up to 18 months of rental assistance can be obtained. The family's income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area median income. A legal lease must be in place.

Housing for the Homeless

The Department of Veterans Affairs and HUD have partnered to provide 20,000 Section 8 vouchers to homeless veterans. The voucher subsidizes a portion of the veteran's rent. The veteran must agree to participate in case-management services. These supportive services ensure that he can maintain his residential stability. HUD's Single Room Occupancy Program provides a rental subsidy to landlords that provide housing to homeless individuals. An SRO is a single unit with a bathroom and/or kitchen. The tenant is responsible for paying 30 percent of the total household income toward rent.

Second Chance Homes

The Second Chance Homes Program is for teenage single moms who have no place to live. The program provides housing in an adult-supervised, group-home setting to young mothers and their children. To participate in the program, the mom must agree to obtain her high school diploma or GED. In addition to housing, the girls are provided with support services such as child care, parenting classes, job-skills training and transportation services. Girls between the ages of 14 and 20 and receiving welfare assistance are targeted for this program.
