Can I Qualify for Section 8 If I Receive SSI?
Qualifying for federal housing choice vouchers, also known as Section 8, requires proving your eligibility by disclosing your total household income. However, it's important to know what income is counted and what is not. Also, once approved, you may have to report any changes to your income to determine if you still qualify for benefits.
Section 8
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) oversees the Section 8 program, which is then managed on the local level by area Public Housing Authorities (PHAs). Housing choice vouchers are designed for very low income households to use for safe and suitable housing. Recipients use the vouchers to lease a home, and they must for the difference pay out-of-pocket if the rent exceeds the assistance. However, this excess may be no more than 40 percent of the recipient's monthly income.
Supplemental Security Income
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal Social Security Administration income assistance program for those who make very little money every month, have few resources and are at least 65 years old, blind or disabled. However, the home you live in, your car and burial plots, for example, are not counted as resources in qualifying for benefits. You may receive other benefits, such as food stamps, Medicaid and housing choice vouchers while collecting SSI.
Housing Choice Voucher Eligibility
Housing choice voucher applicants must make 50 percent or less than the local household median to be approved, but 75 percent of vouchers must be given to those who make no more than 30 percent. Income that is counted in these calculations include wages, interest received, welfare, alimony, child support and all periodic payments from Social Security. However, deferred lump-sum or monthly payments from Social Security are not counted as income by HUD. Therefore, you may qualify for Section 8 if you are receiving SSI payments as long as your total household income is 50 percent or less than the area median.
Income Changes
Once approved for housing choice vouchers based on your reported income, you must notify you PHA office if you experience a change in your financial situation. For example, if you are eligible for benefits prior to receiving or being approved for SSI, you must report it if you later qualify for monthly income assistance. If the SSI increases your household income to a level higher than the Section 8 limit for your area, you may become disqualified for housing benefits. Also, if you experience a decrease in SSI benefits, you may be entitled to a higher level of Section 8 assistance
