The Negative Effects of Off-Campus Housing
Moving into off-campus housing can be an exciting experience, but moving out of the dorms brings many changes to a college student's lifestyle. The dorm environment often provides benefits that are not entirely clear until they are unavailable. Though moving to off-campus housing is generally a positive and necessary experience in life, some new challenges can arise after you move out of your college dormitory.
Increased Transportation Costs
College campuses strive to ensure that all the basics --- from cafeterias to book rentals --- are within a short distance of the dorms. In an off-campus environment, you cannot be guaranteed that services like a grocery store will be available nearby. As a result, you can expect to lose time traveling between various services like laundromats or libraries.
Inconvenient Lease Times
When living on campus, students are generally not obligated to pay for housing during the summer, and may be able to change dorms from semester to semester. Unlike dorms, lease times in an apartment building do not generally conform to the school year. A full-year lease limits your options. Either you will have to stay in the apartment for the summer or you will end up making rent payments while you live somewhere else. In rare circumstances, an apartment can be sublet through the summer in order to recoup your costs, but in larger college towns, this can be a rare occurrence.
Unexpected Utility Expenses
With many off-campus apartments and houses, utilities are not included. While some students budget for a fixed housing cost, a sudden heat wave or cold spell can cause a major shift in your energy bill. Lower-rent buildings in particular may have less efficient insulation, and may require more money to heat and cool through the season. This unexpected expense can place a greater strain on your finances and your life.
Rent Obligations
Many off-campus arrangements require you to share the rent with a roommate. Many uncontrollable factors can cause roommates to move out unexpectedly, or become unable to pay their rent. In a dorm room situation, your roommates' financial troubles do not affect your residency, but in an off-campus apartment, most landlords will still hold you liable for the full rent amount.
Decreased Security
College campuses, particularly larger ones, maintain a regular security force. This force is not only available 24 hours a day, for the most part, but is acutely aware of the unique safety concerns of students. In an off-campus environment, your safety falls under the auspices of the general city police department. Even the most exemplary police department will likely not have the personal touch that a campus police force offers. As such, living off campus will require you to have a greater awareness of your own personal safety.
