Scholarships for Single Mothers in Need of Housing Assistance
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides housing assistance in the form of subsidies or grants to low-income families. Single moms who meet the eligibility requirements can apply for help. In addition to the income eligibility requirement, applicants must be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens to receive the maximum award amount. The public housing authority provides information on how to apply for housing assistance.
Rental Subsidy Programs
HUD has several low-income housing programs that single mothers can apply for. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher and Public Housing Programs provide a rental subsidy to income-eligible households. Single moms are allowed to pay 30 percent of their income toward rent. HUD pays for the remaining portion of rent. The Department of Veterans Affairs also provides rental assistance to veterans. Single moms who have served in the military can apply for a HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Section 8 Voucher. In addition to rental assistance, the HUD-VASH program provides case management services to ensure the veteran and her family can maintain their residential stability.
Homeownership Programs
The Homeownership Voucher Program allows Section 8 recipients to convert their rental assistance payment into a mortgage subsidy. Single moms who currently hold a Section 8 voucher pay 30 percent of their income toward the mortgage. The mom must have a steady source of income and have been employed for a minimum of one year to qualify for a Homeownership Voucher. The Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program helps low-income families purchase a home through their own sweat equity. The single mom must put in 100 work hours toward construction of the home to qualify for the purchase. Also, her income cannot exceed 80 percent of the area's median income.
Second Chance Homes
The Second Chance Homes Program provides single teenage moms a place to live while they begin their journey on the road to self-sufficiency. The housing program is an adult-supervised group home type setting for girls and their children to live and receive supportive services. These services include job skills training, childcare, parenting classes and healthcare. The mom must agree to obtain a high school diploma or GED to participate in the program. The program typically targets girls between the ages of 14 and 22.
Emergency Housing Grant
HUD's Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program provides temporary housing grants to homeless families and those at risk of becoming homeless. Single moms with income at or below 50 percent of the area median income are eligible to apply for up to 18 months of rental and utility assistance. Moms who have already lost a home can apply for help to pay for a security deposit, rent, utility fees and moving expenses. If housing is not readily available, the mom can get a motel voucher for up to 30 days.
