Rental Assistance to Pay My Rent

Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program
The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This program helps homeless families. or those at risk of becoming homeless. The family must be facing eviction, foreclosure or a financial hardship to get help. The money can be used to pay for rent, security deposits, a moving truck and other moving expenses. To qualify for help the family's income must be less than 50 percent of the median income in the area where they live. A motel voucher can also be provided for up to 30 days while the family is transitioning to permanent housing.
Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has programs to help homeless veteran families or those at risk of becoming homeless. The veteran must lack an adequate nighttime residence, and the family's income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area's median income. Temporary assistance can be used to pay for rent, a security deposit, and utility fees. The program also provides supportive services such as child care, health care and transportation services to ensure the family can maintain its independent lifestyle.
Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program that provides a rental subsidy to very low-income families. Families with incomes no greater than 30 percent of the area's median income are given a preference over families with higher income. The family is responsible for paying 30 percent of its income toward rent, with HUD paying the remaining portion. The tenant can live in any desired rental housing as long as the landlord accepts a voucher as a form of payment.
Transition Assistance
Distressed homeowners facing foreclosure can get help to secure new housing through the Hardest Hit Fund. Created in February 2010, this program funnels funding to states that had 20 percent declines in property values as well as unstable unemployment. Homeowners who have sold their homes to avoid foreclosure can get money to pay for rent, security deposits, and other moving expenses. To qualify for help, the home facing foreclosure must have been the homeowner's primary place of residence. The family's income cannot exceed 120 percent of the area's median income.
