How to Get Income Based Rent

If your income and assets are very limited, you may qualify for income-based rent. One program that offers both rental assistance and income-based rent is the Housing Choice Voucher Program, formerly known as Section 8. Many areas also offer public housing, which also bases your rent on your household's income. Generally, your rent is 30 percent of your household's income. If you're 65 or older, blind or disabled, you may receive priority in applying for these assistance programs.

    Call and make an appointment with your local public housing authority office. You can find the phone number by calling information, or online at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development website, HUD.gov. Ask them what information you should bring with you to the appointment.

    Gather the information you need for the appointment. Include any recent bank statements, pay stubs, benefit stubs from Social Security and any other financial information. If you've been approved for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, you should bring proof of that as well. Make certain you have financial information for all adult members of your household, not just yourself.

    Attend the appointment. Follow the instructions of the public housing authority administrator you're working with and fill out any needed forms carefully. Missing a signature or initial can delay the application process. Ask what further steps you should take; you may also need to apply directly with public housing unit offices for an apartment.

    Complete any further steps outlined by the public housing office. Visit public housing units, if needed, and complete an application at any that may be suitable for you and your family.

    Find out whether you're approved, and whether you've been placed on a waiting list. You should receive a letter letting you know; but if you don't hear from your public housing office for more than a few weeks, contact them for an update. If you've been placed on a waiting list, you'll need to wait until you move up the list to receive your rental assistance.
