How Do I Relocate While on the Georgia Rental Assistance Program?

The Georgia Department of Community Affairs manages the rental assistance program for low-income residents. The rental assistance program operates in jurisdictions across the country at the county level. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs, which has offices in each county, makes payments and handles transfers; tenants who wish to move into a new jurisdiction or state must work closely with their case manager.

Instructions

    1

Contact the housing authority in the destination area. Make sure it's currently accepting applications.

    2

Contact the Georgia Department of Community Affairs to make sure you're eligible to move. Georgia rental-assistance tenants can't move from their unit until they've completed a one-year lease. The transfer process is called portability. Clarify the process to port your assistance with your case manager to ensure you meet the requirements. Ask your manager about the correct forms to initiate the process, the time period to completion, contact information for the receiving authority and when you can expect approval.

    3

Write a vacate notice to your Georgia Department of Community Affairs and your landlord within the guidelines of your lease. Complete this step when you're certain your destination is taking applications and that you're eligible to move.

    4

Submit a request to transfer form to your Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The form initiates the transfer process. You must also submit the letter of notice to vacate. Make sure your rental and utility payments are current, as the department requests proof. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs sends a package, which includes a letter confirming the transfer and the next steps, to you and the receiving authority.

    5

Attend the scheduled appointment at your destination housing authority. Bring proof of your income, citizenship, assets and identification. The case manager interviews you and provides resources for locating your new home.

    6

Conduct a search for housing in your destination location. Select a home that accepts the subsidy and request the lease from the landlord. Don't sign the lease, however: The new housing authority must review the lease to ensure it meets its standards.

    7

Submit, or ask your landlord to submit, a request for tenancy approval and the unsigned lease to the new housing authority. The case manager schedules an inspection of the unit, which can take as long as three weeks. If the unit is approved, execute the lease and schedule a date to move into your new home.
