Housing Assistance for Individuals

Housing Assistance for Individuals

If you are a single adult without children, you are eligible to receive housing assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD. One of the requirements to receive housing assistance as an individual is a qualifying income, as those who are eligible must have "low" to "very low" incomes, according to HUD. Housing assistance options vary from place to place, so to learn more about what's available in your community, you should consult your local housing authority office.

Housing for the Homeless

You do not need to sleep on a park bench to be homeless. Homeless individuals are those who lack fixed and stable housing and consequently live with friends or relatives because they cannot afford a place of their own or live in a building that does not adequately serve as a home, such as a fifth-wheel trailer. If you believe you are in a homeless situation or at risk of being homeless, you may be eligible for the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program. HPRP provides eligible applicants with rent-free housing for a period of 18 months.

Foreclosure Prevention Assistance

If you are a homeowner who has defaulted on at least three months of mortgage payments, you may be eligible to receive housing assistance from HUD's Emergency Homeowner Loan Program. To qualify, the reason for defaulting on your mortgage payments must be related to being unemployed or underemployed, or because of a medical condition. If you can demonstrate that you were able to make your mortgage payments on time before experiencing a financial hardship, HUD may provide you with a non-recourse subordinate loan of up to $50,000 that bears a 0 percent interest rate. You must use the funds provided through the Emergency Homeowner Loan Program to pay your mortgage and any late fees incurred.

Public Housing and Section 8

If you have a qualifying income, there is a possibility that you could live in a rental property in HUD's public housing program or take advantage of its Housing Choice Voucher Program, which is also referred to as Section 8 housing. In a public housing situation, you live in a HUD-approved property. If you opt for Section 8 housing, you can choose to live in any rental property that accepts Housing Choice Vouchers. In this program, you must spend 30 percent of your monthly income on rent and utility payments and HUD will pay the property owner the remaining balance due on the rent.

Assistance for a First-Time Homeowner

HUD's American Dream Downpayment Initiative can help you purchase your first home if you have a low-income status but feel you are ready to become a homeowner. The ADDI program can provide you with the funds needed to make a down payment or pay the closing costs. You may also receive assistance from the ADDI program if the home you want to purchase needs rehabilitation improvements, such as mold removal.
